The RxA ENVIRx program recognizes the important relationship between Albertans'
health and the environment. Through ENVIRx, pharmacists promote safe and effective
drug use while giving Albertans an opportunity to return unused and expired
medications to their community pharmacy. These medications are collected by
pharmacies and incinerated in an environmentally friendly manner.
Funding Mechanism
ENVIRx program is administered by Alberta pharmacists through RxA.
The contributions from the producers are based on the percentage of the products
returned. Pharmaceutical companies represented by Canada's Research Based Pharmaceutical
Companies (Rx & D), NDMAC Advancing Canadian self-care, Canadian Generic
Pharmaceutical Association (CGPA) voluntarily contribute financially to the
program. Alberta Environment on Waste and Alberta Health and Wellness also provide
small grants to the program funding.
Information for the Public
The public drops off old/unused medications at approximately 850 participating
community pharmacies across Alberta. The pharmacies store the wastes until pickup.
Med Tech Environmental Ltd. is contracted to collect the waste from pharmacies
twice a year in rural Alberta and on an " on call " basis in Edmonton and Calgary.
For more information on medications and their disposal, talk to your pharmacist or call the Pharmacists Association of Alberta at (780) 990-0326.
